Successful Recruitment for your Small Business
For small businesses, employees can make or break a business. From customer service, to quality craftmanship, finding the right personalities and skills to complete your team is essential for business growth.
While engaging a recruitment agency may be out of scope for many small traders, here are our tips for finding the right candidate utilising your own resources.
Attract the Right People
One of the most important elements to recruiting the right people, is to attract them. A business that offers a positive and friendly working environment is critical. Offering incentives, benefits, and flexibility where possible will broaden your catchment and help you reach your goal of finding a star employee. Furthermore, a strong company culture will encourage the right candidate to accept the offer once presented.
Utilise your Network
There are plenty of places to advertise a role, such as www.seek.com.au, but don’t forget social platforms. LinkedIn is a great place to narrow your search for the right candidate with the right skills. Facebook Groups with specific interests also prove valuable to target specific trades or service groups as well as localising your search – simply search for Groups such as “Northern Beaches Job Board” for example. Using your own network (industry connections) to find like-minded candidates with glowing recommendations is also a great place to start.
Value Referees
Always ask for references and be sure to reach out to them before offering a role. When you do speak to the referees ask the important questions which will impact the success of the role within your business. Before you speak, have a list of set questions to ensure you end the call feeling confident moving forward.
Refine your Onboarding Process
A standard interview process can involve several interviews. Don’t feel pressured by workload to hire the first candidate you meet. Instead interview your candidate and consider including team members who will be working closely with them in day-to-day activities. A successful team must work well together, and initial conversations will be a key indicator as to how this potential new candidate will fit within your team. This process has proven more valuable to many small businesses than engaging with recruitment services.
If the role you are looking to fill is a replacement role, allow the existing role occupant to be part of the onboarding and training to ensure a smooth process. This has shown to greatly increase confidence and smooth the transition into the role.
Finding and maintaining great employees is key to keeping your business strong. With consistent recruitment processes which call on your network connections, internal team members and online communities, you can actively seek to employ your next team member with great success. Once you have found your next superstar employee, be sure to support with adequate training, incentives and benefits which have shown to employee retention.
