Small business staffing: Mastering communication in a small team
When multiple personalities are brought together in the workplace great things can be accomplished. For example, creativity can be enhanced, and amazing work can be generated. However, the same situation can also result in communication barriers as well as conflicts in work styles.
To be able to effectively manage multiple personalities in the workplace, you must view each individual objectively, focus on each person's strengths, and promote positive communication. As a leader, you will be in a position to set the tone for how your staff will work together as a team with acceptance, understanding and flexibility.
Here are just some ways you can contribute to a harmonious work environment for your employees.
Promote open communication
Communication should always be open and constructive. Creating a safe working environment is critical when dealing with multiple personalities in the workplace. This allows for the unincumbered expression of ideas and suggestions, as well as the ability to openly receive constructive criticisms. Different personality types and perspectives can lead to a range of creative solutions that will improve enjoyment for staff members as well as the efficiency of your small business.
Harness individual strengths
When hiring take time to appreciate the differences in personality styles and identify the key strengths of your potential employees. Once employed, identify each individual’s strengths and acknowledge them with the team. As a result of recognising and understanding the differences between employees, staff may be able to better understand each other’s communication style and leverage each other's strengths to achieve workplace goals.
Be flexible with work styles
According to SEEK, a significant number of employees (42%) found it challenging when they and a colleague had differing work styles. As a leader, it is important to understand that your way of approaching and completing work is not the only way. For example, different kinds of personalities perform well in different kinds of situations. An employer may find it beneficial to allow some flexibility in the way employees approach a project, as long as they meet deadlines and perform well. Allowing flexibility and being open to suggestions for internal improvements can benefit your team as a whole.
Consider your approach as the employer
The same approach cannot be applied to all employees in the same way. In order to give each employee the best work experience, it is recommended that you focus on tailoring your way of communication on a case by case basis. This can be taken into consideration when you are delegating new tasks or delivering feedback on completed projects.
Alongside your many roles as a small business owner, creating a harmonious work environment is a critical component when it comes to the success of your business.
